there design are not as rigid as a variable resitors (Potentiometer etc). they are not operated during the normal use of a circuit. Preset resistor is a variable resistor that is only operated during menufacturing and tuning a circuit. This type of variable resistor has a builting switch that breaks or make the contact between the two termianls. Increasing or decreasing the presure between these metal plates increases the resistance of the device. This type of variable resistor is made up of carbon discs clamped together between two metal plates. Each step movement increase or decrease a fixed amount of resistance. The contacts does not slide smoothley but jumps from steps. This type of variable resistor’s resistance increase or decreases in steps. It can achieve infinite numbers of resistance values ranging from min to max. the sliding or rotating the contact gives out a continuous value of resistance. Such type of variable resistor has a continuous resistance i.e. They are used for increasing or decreasing the current flow in a circuit during its normal operation. The two of them have fixed resistance while the third terminal move over the resistive trace or wire to increase or decrease the resistance. IEEE & IEC symbols of Resistors Variable & Adjustable Resistor SymbolsĪ variable resistor also known as potentiometer or rheostate has a variable resistance. Resistors and Symbols of Different Types of Resistors. They are used for saving space & cost of placing.

The resistors are not connected together except for its one side which is connected with VCC for pull up & GND for pull down. It contains multiple individual resistors denoted by the number in the symbols e.g 8 in this case. Resistor array is a combination of multiple resistors in a single packaging. The current is measured by the voltage drop across it. It remembers its last known resistance when it is Powered OFF/ON.Ī shunt resistor (also known as current shunt) is a resistor with low & precise resistance used to measure the current through it. Memristor or also known as memory resistor is a hypothetical non-volatile memory component whose resistance depends on the current that has been passed through it in the past. It operates like a resistor that limits the current flow & if the current exceeds its certain limit then it blow out opening the circuit. These both symbols represent a protection resistor. The current flow through the heating element generates heat energy due to its resistance. This component converts the electrical energy into heat energy. The real part represent the resistance & the imaginary part represents the reactance. It can then be repaced with a fixed resistor having a preferred value closest to the measured value. The impedance is a complex quantity made of real & imaginary part. Once the best position is found, remove the variable resistor and measure its value.Adjust the 470Ω variable resistor (if used in place of R3) for best wave shape with reliable operation.Connect up the power supply and connect an oscilloscope to the output.Carefully check for any short circuits caused by solder bridging adjacent tracks, and for any poorly soldered joints.Terminal Block.(This may be replaced by a 9V battery connector & and an output lead if preferred).Electrolytic (check for correct polarity before soldering).Transistor (check for correct e b c positions before soldering).Solder the components in place in the following order.Double check their correct position before cutting. Mark the holes where track cuts are to be made.On a piece of 9 x 25 hole strip-board, mark hole A1 to ensure that counting the strips and holes for placing track cuts and components always starts from the same point.2.2.4 Hartley Oscillator - Stripboard Layout Construction on Stripboard
